The Highland Cougars Volleyball Team returned to the court on August 1st for their first official practice of the 2025 season. Coming off of achieving their first 20-win season in the past 15 years in 2024, and also an undefeated (6-0) spring season, the Cougars have their sights set on accomplishing even larger goals. With 40 matches on the schedule, this fall has all of the makings to be a spectacular one in the Cougar Den. "It's an impressive accomplishment to get to 20 wins in this league," said Coach Heim. "The entire team knows that 20 wins isn't just a remarkable height to reach…it's now the baseline standard that we're setting in place. I'm excited and eager to see what new exciting heights this unit can reach!".
The Cougars return only five members to the Sophomore class, but one that is no stranger to challenges. Eyes will be focused firmly on returning All-Region and All-Arrowhead Conference Outside Hitter, Kaidynce Lynch, to lead the Sophomore class. "My decision to come to Highland has been a great one. My teammates have been awesome, & with great coaching, we are building something great here. I'm very excited for this next season to begin." said Lynch. Other notable names to watch this season include the Cougars' only returning Setter Brianna Gonnerman, and Middle Blocker Taryn Mathews, who received All-Conference votes.
The Cougars post a large incoming class of ten talented Freshmen that have been full, active participants in summer workouts and open gyms. With a large class combining with a smaller class of experienced Sophomores, there will likely be plenty of new faces hitting the court early for the Cougars. "This summer has been really great, especially for us as a Freshman class. We've gotten a lot of work done and we're really excited for the season to start. This team already has great dedication and love for the game." said incoming Right Side Addison Ness.
The Cougars begin their season with a free-to-the-public Blue vs. Orange scrimmage on Friday, August 15th at 6pm at Larry F. Kahl Gymnasium. Their first official matches will be against John Wood Community College, and John A. Logan College at The Opening Weekend Tournament at the UW Health Sports Facility in Rockford beginning on Friday, August 22nd.
