BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — What began as a straightforward two-round spring event quickly turned into one of the most unpredictable tournaments of the early season, as the Highland Community College men's golf team showed resilience and competitiveness at the ICC Cougar Clash on March 19.
Originally scheduled as a 36-hole event at Weaver Ridge Golf Club, the tournament faced immediate challenges due to mid-March snowfall in the Peoria area. Tournament officials first adjusted the format to a one-day event at Metamora Fields Golf Club. However, with lingering snow coverage still impacting course conditions, the event was ultimately relocated once more—this time to Prairie Vista Golf Course.
Despite the constant changes, the field remained strong, featuring 15 teams including several of the top players in the NJCAA national rankings, along with highly respected four-year programs such as University of Dubuque and Olivet Nazarene University.
Highland entered the event shorthanded, battling significant injuries throughout the lineup. The Cougars were forced to withdraw three key contributors—Jake Maloret, A.J. Anderson, and Aaron Doherty—due to injury. Notably, two of those players rank among the top four on the team in season scoring average, making the challenge even steeper.
Even with a depleted roster, the Cougars rose to the occasion, placing three golfers inside the top eight individually and remaining competitive throughout the event.
Leading the charge was team captain and sophomore standout Luis Duffy, who delivered a performance to remember. Duffy captured medalist honors with a two-round total of 139 (71-68, -5), highlighted by a career-low round of 68.
Duffy's path to the top was anything but easy. He found himself in a three-way playoff alongside two of the top-ranked players in NJCAA Division II—Gabriele Bravin, the #1 ranked individual, and Trey Boecker, the #2 ranked individual in the NJCAA DII Golf Rankings.
The playoff took place on the iconic, drivable par-4 18th hole at Prairie Vista. Both Duffy and Boecker aggressively attacked the green with 3-woods but found trouble, landing in the water just right of the putting surface. Bravin, taking a more controlled approach, striped a 2-iron to just short of the green, setting up a crucial advantage.
Duffy and Boecker each gave their par attempts a legitimate chance to extend the playoff, but ultimately recorded bogeys. Bravin capitalized with a steady par to secure the victory.
Due to tournament tiebreaker rules, Duffy earned second place honors over Boecker thanks to his tournament-best final round of 68—marking a new career low for the Cougar captain.
In a tournament defined by weather challenges, course changes, and lineup adversity, Highland's performance was a testament to the team's depth and determination. With key players sidelined, the Cougars proved they have the resilience and leadership necessary to compete at a high level as the spring season progresses.
